Art creation as a profound reflection of life experiences and exploration of identity

Hui Yat Hung suffered a stroke in 2023, which greatly affected his mobility. His post-stroke symptoms include difficulty in walking and numbness in right arm. However, he never gave up and working hard on physiotherapies. Besides, he has actively participated in different types of art activities.

Ms Ko, an expressive arts therapist, shared her impressions with Hui when he first joined her art group. Although he had limited mobility in his hand, He was very concentrated and committed, managed to tear color paper slowly and create his version of landscape artwork. Since then, he has continued to experience different mediums of art including light clay, collage and painting.

Art sessions has provided a safe and non-judgement environment for Hui to explore his creativity and express himself. Art creation is also a process of facing challenges and solving problems. The creator uses his creativity to transform and overcome limitations and increase the range of playfulness.

Ms Ko once invited the participants in an art group to imagine what kind of landscape their life is. Hui said: "I had a stroke in my eighties, and my life is a rugged mountain pathway. There are twists and turns. However, I never regret it. I believe that the future will be bright and sunshine." His words moved and encouraged many fellow stroke survivors in the group.

Recently, Hui has started to write with his right hand. He felt he is making progress day by day and he is full of confidence. He said that creation is a process of witnessing and commemorating the efforts of his right hand.
